Portugal is open, awarded ‘Safe Travels’ label
In these unusual times, the handling of the COVID-19 crisis was exceptionally well done by the Portuguese government. Abiding by scientific advice, Portugal went into lockdown at a very early stage and with stringent contact tracing and a disciplined approach, afterwards reaped the benefit of very low numbers of COVID-19 cases compared to its neighbours and most countries in the world. The lockdown was lifted in stages from mid-May and the local community is now out and about enjoying the beaches, restaurants and bars across the country.
In recognition of this, it is the first European country to be awarded the “Safe Travels” label by the World Travel & Tourism Council as Portugal continues to place the safety of the people in high priority whilst still opening its doors to the world.
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched the “Safe Travels” label which aims to recognize destinations that comply with health and hygiene rules in line with Safe Travel Protocols.
The Portuguese government has already stated that no quarantine will be required for visitors. There is also a new local label called “Safe and Clean” from the Tourism Portugal authority which certifies that visitor accommodation and restaurants comply with all the cleaning and sanitation rules as specified by the Ministry of Health.
From June 15th, holders of a European Passport will be able to travel to Portugal. As of today, the official date of opening to all visitors worldwide is July 1st.
